Tony Abbott gave a speech in London knowing full well it would find its way home and be branded anti-immigration. He was right about the reaction — and right about the substance.
What he said
Abbott argued that the current mass-migration settings were put together in a way that would extinguish Australia’s Celtic and Anglo-Saxon heritage. I’d say he’s perfectly right — and that in some parts of the country it has already happened.
The part everyone missed
Here’s the bit that gets lost in the outrage: it’s not immigration and it’s not multiculturalism that’s wrong. Immigration is best when it comes from like-minded countries with similar cultural backgrounds, and in numbers that are actually sustainable. Get that right and it works. Get it wrong and it doesn’t.
Pro-Australian, full stop
Wanting it done properly doesn’t make you anti-immigration. It makes you pro-Australian — which I’d hope we all are. Raising the question isn’t off-limits, no matter how loudly someone tells you it is.
So explain it
If a party sets policy that points the other way, we’re owed an explanation. If the settings really are designed to extinguish that heritage — then say so, Prime Minister, and tell us why. That’s a debate we’re allowed to have.
